Modern Cultural Talismans
Talismans, amulets, charmed objects are all manifestations of a similar concept. The desire of an individual to assert control over their lives through "...averting of some result displeasing, or the obtaining of some outcome pleasing, to the possessor of that object an in a way which seems to be beyond natural laws..." (Hildburgh, 1951). Often relegated to superstition or confirmation bias, the distinctive prevalence and longevity of the concept suggests a deeper cultural connection. We may no longer "avert the evil eye" but even in the modern day, we still use talismans to ward against a perceived evil or bring about a beneficial outcome.

Despite the intended outcome, the bending of the world to the owner or user's will, these modern talismans also act as signifiers to those both within and without their chosen group. Through performance, they indicate their owners intentions and associations. Esoterically, these use of these objects connects individuals within a cultural group. Exoterically, they are often used to ward off, enrage or identify those not as part of the group. Indeed the mocking and defacing of these talismans is often cited, esoterically, as proof of their efficacy.
